For most families, October and November are the heaviest cooking months of the year. Halloween treats, game-day snacks, weekend baking and then Thanksgiving dinner all land on the same counters, the same oven and the same refrigerator. A kitchen that starts the season clean stays manageable. One that starts behind never quite catches up until January.
Take everything out of the fridge, not just the obvious leftovers. Toss anything expired, wash shelves and drawers with warm water and a little dish soap, and dry them completely before putting food back. You are about to need every inch of that space for big dinners and leftovers, and a clean fridge makes it easy to see what you actually have.
Do the same with the pantry. Check dates on baking supplies, spices and canned goods, wipe the shelves, and group items by use. Finding the flour, sugar and vanilla in one place on a busy Saturday is a small thing that saves real time and stress.
Grease builds up quietly all summer. Clean the oven interior, stovetop and range hood filter now, before you need them for a turkey or a tray of cookies. A clogged hood filter means smoke and cooking smells stay inside the house instead of leaving it, and a dirty oven can smoke and change the taste of everything you bake.
Sink drains, the dishwasher filter, cabinet fronts and even the trash can hold odors and sticky residue. Give each of them a proper clean and clear your counters of any appliance you do not use every week. More open counter space means easier prep and much faster cleanup after every meal.
