Make Your Living Room Guest Ready Before Halloween and Thanksgiving

From Halloween parties to Thanksgiving visits, your living room is about to host more people in two months than in the rest of the year combined. It is also the first room guests see and the one where everyone ends up gathering. Getting it ready now means you can say yes to plans without a last-minute scramble the night before.

Start with the soft surfaces

Sofas, armchairs, cushions and rugs hold far more dust and allergens than hard surfaces. Vacuum all upholstery with the proper attachment, including under and between the cushions, where crumbs and pet hair collect. Flip and fluff cushions so they wear evenly and look fuller.

Curtains are the other big one. After a long summer with the windows closed, they hold a surprising amount of dust. Wash or vacuum them, and clean the inside of the windows so the softer fall light actually reaches the room. The difference is noticeable the same day.

Make room for the season

Coffee tables, side tables and shelves collect clutter fast. Keep only a few pieces out, wipe every surface, and leave space for snacks, drinks and seasonal decorations. A clear surface reads as clean even when the room is full of people, and it makes cleanup after a party much faster.

Fresh, not perfumed

Open the windows on a cool morning to air the room out completely. If you like a seasonal scent, keep it light. Guests should notice a clean home, not a strong fragrance, especially anyone with allergies or sensitivities.
